"Six Months In A Leaky Boat" was released in the spring of 1982 on Split Enz's seventh studio album, Time and Tide. I've always been a huge fan of the Finn Bros.....two amazing bands propelled by their talents; Split Enz and (later) Crowded House....not to mention all the other amazing things they have produced! I listened to mucho Split Enz in college.....some seriously great albums that take me right back! I always planned a vid for this track, and actually had some work started, but then I came across this wonderful little vid and thought I'd try and spruce up the video for HD and edit it for the longer studio track using the lossless remaster. This video version is IMO just so much better suited for the track (though I don't really remember seeing it back in the day, but clearly remember the more popular version playing on MTV) than the more elaborate production ...which has some cool sequences but almost overpowers the tune....the tone is inconsistent...sequence of dancing on an island (they're supposed to be IN A BOAT....and that 2 minute intro! LOL! Anyway, I was thrilled to find this video but it was low-res and difficult to work so had to really lose definition to lose the nasties for HD....check out the original video as it looks great! HUGE SPECIAL THANKS to Folk rock, Australian rock & more Channel! This channel is seriously stuffed with rare and classic music.....A MUST SEE FOR FANS...CHECK IT OUT / nearlyoutofideas Watch the original video: • Split Enz : Six Months in a Leaky Boat The song is a reference to the time it took pioneers to sail to Australia and New Zealand (hence the reference to "the tyranny of distance" - a history by Geoffrey Blainey), and a metaphor that refers to lead singer Tim Finn's nervous breakdown. The song was "discouraged from airplay" in Britain during the Falklands crisis by the BBC for reasons of morale - it was thought that references to leaky boats was not appropriate during the naval action in the war. FROM WIKI: "Dirty Creature" was the album's lead single, followed by "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". Both were hits in Australia, reaching #6 and #2, with the album reaching #1. Time and Tide also topped the album charts in New Zealand. The third single issued in New Zealand was "Hello Sandy Allen" (written about the world's tallest woman), while "Never Ceases to Amaze Me" was released in Australia. Its video was shot in a zoo and featured Tim Finn with an afro; the band now considers the shoot embarrassing. The song "Fire Drill", recorded for Time and Tide, was eventually left off the final release and instead became a b-side. The band opened many live shows with the song in the year of the album's release. A number of copies of Time and Tide in the UK featured a remixed version of the band's earlier release Frenzy. The album was re-released in 2006 along with all of Split Enz's studio album catalogue. Some albums were rearranged, reordered or adjusted; however Time and Tide was left in the same order as the original with only remastering the tracks. END WIKI. [Lyrics] When I was a young boy, I wanted to sail around the world That's the life for me, living on the sea Spirit of a sailor, circumnavigates the globe The lust of a pioneer, will acknowledge no frontier I remember you by, thunderclap in the sky Lightning flash, tempers flare, 'round the horn if you dare I just spent six months in a leaky boat Lucky just to keep afloat Aotearoa, rugged individual Glisten like a pearl, at the bottom of the world The tyranny of distance, didn't stop the cavalier So why should it stop me? I'll conquer and stay free Ah c'mon all you lads, let's forget and forgive There's a world to explore, tales to tell back on shore I just spent six months in a leaky boat Six months in a leaky boat Ship-wrecked love can be cruel, don't be fooled by her kind There's a wind in my sails will protect and prevail I just spent six months in a leaky boat Nothing to it leaky boat
