I believe I can fly … a straw with hoops. You’ll need: Paper Scissors Pencil Non-bendable, plastic drinking straw Tape Ruler Procedure: 1. Predict how far the straw will fly with and without the hoops. Do you think the hoops will make it go farther? 2. Throw a plain straw to see how far it goes. 3. Cut two strips of paper, one an inch wide and five inches long and another an inch wide and 10 inches long. 4. Curl each paper strip into a hoop. Tape the ends together. 5. Tape the small hoop to one end of the straw. 6. Tape the large hoop to the other end of the straw. Make sure the hoops align with one another. 7. Throw your hoop glider! Review your prediction – did the hoop glider go farther than the straw alone? Go further: What will happen if you add a third hoop? Do you think the hoop glider would work if the hoops were on opposite sides of the straw? What if the hoops were bigger? Smaller?
