Putting the concept “political society” in the center, Tuğal argues that Turkey’s intensifying crisis cannot be explained by Erdoğan’s authoritarianism. The problems are inherent in the very model of Islamic liberalism that formed the basis of the AK party’s ascendancy and rule since 2002—an intended marriage of neoliberalism and democracy. And this model can only be understood as a response to regional politics—especially as a response to the “Iranian Model”—a marriage of corporatism and Islamic revolution. The Turkish model was a failure in its home country, and the dynamics of the Arab world (most centrally, the structure of their political societies) made it a tough commodity to export. Cihan Tuğal (UC Berkeley, Sociology) works on mobilization, socioeconomic change, religion, and politics. His first book Passive Revolution: Absorbing the Islamic Challenge to Capitalism studied the rise of liberal Islam and its popularization among the poor and erstwhile revolutionaries. In The Fall of the Turkish Model: How the Arab Uprisings Brought down Islamic Liberalism, Tugal explores Islamic movements and regimes in Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Iran, revealing the dynamics behind the fall of liberalism across the Middle East. Tuğal’s next book (which is currently under review) focuses on how Islamic and Christian charity constructs the liberal subject and alternatives to it.
