"There Was A Country to Save" - WWII, Rosie the Riveter's Story A resident of Bucks County, PA, Mae Krier became a leader in the 1980’s movement to award the Congressional Gold Medal to all Rosie the Riveters, the women who, like Krier, worked during World War II to build the airplanes and armaments needed to fight the war. In an effort to recruit them for the war effort, women were portrayed as attractive, confident, resolved to do their part to win the war. Of all the images of the working woman during World War II, the image of her in factories predominates. Rosie the Riveter--the strong, competent woman dressed in overalls and bandanna--was introduced as a symbol of patriotic womanhood. Mae Krier’s efforts finally paid off when Congress voted to award these women the gold medal. Senator Casey led the effort along with U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), and U.S. Representatives Jackie Speier (D-CA-14) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1). In all, 76 senators co-sponsored the Senate bill, including every female senator. Mae Krier's Birthday is now designated as National Rosie the Riveter Day, because Mae has spent years advocating for “Rosie’s” recognition and encouraging all girls to believe in their own powerful potential. Video Interview Recorded July 24, 2023.
