Today we’re back in the lab with a spectacularly fun slime experiment, we’re making Magnetic Slime! We know that slime seems like just a fun activity but there is a lot to be learned from slime. This episode features a suspension of iron in a network of cross-linked polymer molecules (isn't that a fun way to say slime?) that reacts to a magnetic field! This alien looking, inky mess oozes, flows, and appears to consume our neodymium magnets. Pro tip: for a cleaner slime making experience (it's a paradox, we know), combine your ingredients inside of a large ziploc bag. The downloadable PDF worksheet for this experiment can be found here: https://ExplorationStation.net/magnet... -Materials- 1 cup white school glue ½ water 2 tablespoons contact solution (must contain boric acid, also known as sodium borate) 1 tablespoon baking soda 1 tablespoon iron filings 1 tablespoon iron powder Measuring spoons and cups Large ziploc bag Rare earth magnets for play Amazon Links to Materials: Iron Oxide Powder - shorturl.at/jlDGU Iron Filings - shorturl.at/zALZ0 Washable White Glue - shorturl.at/fguvO Measuring Utensils - shorturl.at/kpxE5 Baking Soda - shorturl.at/iuwN8 Neodymium Magnets - shorturl.at/ejpxM -Procedure- 1. Pour glue and water into ziploc bag, mix well. 2. Add contact lens solution. 3. Add baking soda and combine until mixture stops sticking to the bag. If your slime is still too liquid, add more baking soda, a little at a time. 4. Pour in iron filings and iron powder. Knead mixture in bag until fillings and powder are evenly distributed and mixture becomes more firm. 5. Now have fun playing with magnetic slime and neodymium magnets! Young children using rare earth magnets should be supervised by an adult as they are a swallowing hazard.
