It is renowned for its exceptionally high annual rainfall. Mawsynram experiences a unique meteorological phenomenon due to its geographical location. During the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal sweep over the region and collide with the Khasi Hills. The hills force the warm, moisture-laden air to ascend and cool rapidly, leading to intense condensation and heavy rainfall. The average annual rainfall in Mawsynram is around 467 inches (approximately 11,871 millimeters). However, during particularly wet years, this figure can exceed even higher, making it one of the wettest inhabited places on the planet.
