Electricity and magnetism are closely linked, a fact discovered by Hans Christian Oersted when he saw a compass needle deflect near a wire carrying an electric current. A compass needle is actually a small magnet with a north and south pole, and it aligns itself with magnetic fields. A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where force is exerted, and we represent this field using lines that emerge from the north pole and merge at the south pole. The shape of this magnetic field changes depending on the shape of the wire carrying the current. For a straight wire, the field forms circles around it, and you can find the direction using the Right-Hand Thumb Rule: if your thumb points in the direction of the current, your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field. If the wire is wrapped into a coil called a solenoid, it creates a field just like a bar magnet, which allows us to create strong temporary magnets called electromagnets. This magnetic force can actually move wires, which is how electric motors work; when a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a pushing force. In our homes, we use this electricity through circuits that include safety measures like an earth wire to prevent shocks. We also use electric fuses, which are safety devices that melt and break the circuit if the current becomes too strong, preventing damage from overloading or short-circuits.
