The iconic "Karamon" gate, once a symbol of the garden's elegance, was tragically destroyed during World War II. This video documents the restoration of the Karamon gate's "waistboard," a project aimed at reviving the beauty of this lost Japanese cultural heritage. [Craftsmanship: Inheriting Tradition] The restoration work involved a designer tasked with recreating the intricate design based on historical photographs and ancient documents, which was then entrusted to woodcarvers. The craftsmen meticulously sharpened dozens of carving tools, breathing life into the sacred zelkova wood.
