This propaganda piece documents the early stages of their invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 as part of Operation Barbarossa. It portrays a swift and decisive German victory, emphasizing the destruction of Soviet forces, the capture of prisoners, and the liberation of occupied territories. The narrative dehumanizes Soviet soldiers, glorifies the German military, and highlights the effectiveness of their coordinated attacks, particularly air superiority. It aims to showcase the strength of the German war machine and justify the invasion. 0:34-1:54: The newsreel begins with a salute to fallen comrades, showing German engineers quickly constructing a passage, and then depicts their arrival in Grodno. 2:04-3:24: The city of Grodno, Belarus is shown in a desolate state after intense fighting. The narrator describes Soviet army units being encircled and German tanks preparing for a counterattack. (Grodno came under German occupation in June, 1941 and it lasted until July 1944. .) 3:33-4:27: The German forces engage in a wide-front battle, pushing back the Soviet troops. The narration claims the destruction or capture of thousands of Soviet tanks and the taking of enemy positions. 4:27-5:48: The focus shifts to the battle for a major Soviet fortress at Brest in June, 1941, with descriptions of intense fighting and the eventual surrender of some Soviet garrisons, clearing the path to Brest. 6:16-7:41: The film shows wounded Soviet soldiers and captured prisoners, portraying them as "primitive" and "illiterate." It claims that the swift German victory exposes the "true image of the Soviet paradise." 7:41-9:27: The narrative continues with the German forces retaking Brest and advancing towards Lviv, overcoming Soviet resistance in a series of battles. 9:42-11:07: After battle images of destroyed Soviet tanks and artillery are shown. And then the newsreel shows captured Soviet prisoners. It also states the importance of the German early victories. 11:48-13:55:The film portrays German troops being welcomed as liberators in Galicia. It then shows the downing of Soviet aircraft by German anti-aircraft fire and claims German air superiority. 13:58-15:15: German aircraft are shown bombing Soviet troop concentrations, fortifications, and supply lines, disrupting reinforcements and retreats. The film emphasizes the effective coordination of German forces and praises the soldiers' courage. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
