Seaboard System SD40 leading a coal train on the former P&N. (1989)

Caught this Pelzer coal train in 1989 with a interesting mix of EMD & GE power. The video starts with the coal train headed in the opposite direction (northbound) from normal loaded trains, through the former ACL yard in Spartanburg; called the Lower Yard by the local railroad personnel. The train was being detoured account a derailment on the former Clinchfield line north of Spartanburg. It had come down the old L&N to Atlanta, then up to Greenwood, SC and then headed north to Spartanburg. The second shot shows the train crossing the bridge over Fairforest Creek near Westgate Mall in Spartanburg on the former P&N. The third shot shows the train crossing New Hope Rd near I-85. The last shot shows the train headed through the former P&N yard in Greenville, SC next to the yard office. The Santa Fe (Kodachrome) C30-7 was part of a group of units that (power short) CSX was leasing at the time. copyright © 2010 do not use without permission...
