https://www.dfxparts.com.au Fork valves from Australian suspension specialists, DFX. Is this the best value suspension upgrade for the DR650? The price is certainly good for budget DR650 suspension mods. The fork valves are the cheapest kit on the market. And the shock upgrade is also the cheapest upgrade we could find at only AUD269 or about USD200 including international postage. Regular viewers will know we have used FFRC Plex Valves in our DR650 forks. But the current versions were revised and we found they had lost that 'plush' feel over smaller bumps and rocky terrain. So here is our DFX fork valve review. My brother was keen to try the DFX valves instead. How do they work? The DR650 suspension has the prehistoric 'rod' forks, whereas most modern motorbikes have 'cartridge' forks. These DFX fork valves are designed to act like cartridge forks. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. They contain the same type of shims to dramatically improve compression and rebound damping. You just remove your fork caps and springs. Drop the fork valves in. Done! Some fork valves require modifications, stronger springs, or heavier fork oil. But the DFX valves are designed to work with the standard setup for the typical rider. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. We should mention there is a cheaper upgrade. Simply swap the 5W fork oil for 10W. And replace the fork spacers with longer sections of PVC pipe to increase the preload. We have done this in the past but then you lose that plushness over small bumps and corrugations. If you are on a budget it's worth trying first. But generally most riders opt for fork valves instead. So did the DFX fork valves work? Yes. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. They definitely had that 'plush' feel over small bumps where the current FFRC Plex valves are not so great. But they still worked well for little jumps and big impacts. This is impressive when the standard forks springs are so soft. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. What about heavier riders? We weigh 90kg or 200 pounds and found the fork valves were close to perfect. But heavier springs might be needed in these cases.... Riders heavier than 100kg or 220 pounds. Very aggressive riders. Or a DR650 with a huge Safari gas tank and/or a heavy load. There is a definite improvement for road riding too. The forks don't 'dive' the moment you hit the front brakes hard. They don't wallow when there are dips in the road. A big improvement. You can probably see in the slow motion shots that the stock rear shock has poor damping, especially the rebound damping. We are keen to try the DFX rear shock upgrade next. This is the cheapest upgrade we could find. If the improvement is similar to the fork valves then this will be great value too. We checked the website and these valves are available for other models too. We are keen to hear about other solutions for the sloppy DR650 forks. What have you tried? What worked best? Did you just keep the stock setup? Let us know in the comments. We have occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. We have won the polished turd award five years in a row. And we have a world record 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information. We think the whole motorbike scene is getting too commercial. So called dual sport riding reviews are just glossy ads nowdays. Everyone is trying to sell you stuff you don't need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop. Of course if you are cashed up and into bling, go for it. All we are saying is there's also the budget option for adventure riding. And it won't hold you back. Why? We reckon it's 80% the rider and 20% the bike. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure.
