This video is a sample of vital and beneficial IEP development training that is taught through Advocates University. In this video, James Gallini provides an overview of informative slides that he uses to explain how to develop your child's IEP analyzed against the various educational performance areas of potential deficit for your child. What are the educational performance areas? Academics, Social/emotional learning, Communication, Functional/Independent skills, Transition (when age appropriate). Most public schools across the country focus on Academics and pay little attention to the other areas of educational performance need. This is the wrong approach and is especially wrong following the Supreme Court clarification of what a FAPE is under the Endrew F. decision. The Endrew F. decision requires IEP teams to analyze a student's educational performance needs "in light of the child's individual circumstances" and this is best described by your child's diagnostic profile, most current evaluation results and the peer-reviewed scientifically-based treatments, methodology, instructional approach that your child requires to accomplish tangible goals. Every child's deficits and needs are different yet the public school model for educational delivery is fairly uniform and myopic to where most teachers, regardless of good intent, simply do not understand and haven't been taught how to analyze and appropriately construct a meaningful and individualized IEP. This video shatters that old model and provides the proper perspective in knowing the child and then constructing an IEP that prioritizes the long-term needs and goals of the child. Always remember that the ultimate purpose and goal of the IDEA and the reason there is federal/state funding is for three purposes: Independent Living, Economic Viability, and Continued Education. It is never too early to begin prioritizing your child's long-term needs based upon their individual circumstances.... with most children with IEPs, the Academic bubble would be the priority yet there is a segment of our student population where too many IEP teams focus on Academics yet the child isn't toilet trained, can't dress or feed themselves and can't functionally communicate.... these are the children that are most at-risk of being failed by "the system" and, as a result, putting immense long-term strain on families, social support services and stripping that of human of independence according to their circumstances and stifling their dignity. We can and must do better and James Gallini provides the road map to do just that.
