Thousands demonstrate in Rome against racism

(7 Jun 2020) Thousands of demonstrators turned out for a noisy, peaceful rally against racism in Rome's sprawling People's Square on Sunday. With the majority wearing masks against COVID-19 contagion, participants listened for several hours to speeches and held up hand-made placards reading 'Black Lives Matter' and 'It's a White Problem'. Gabriele Planamente, a film student in the square, said the call against racism was stronger than fear of the virus. Rome's first major rally against racism had many organizers, including a 25-year-old Roman student, Denise Berhane,  an organization called Neri Italiani – Black Italians,  a women's group, FridaysforFuture Rome, a US expatriates' organization and the Sardines, a grass-roots Italian protest group which encourages civic involvement.
