THE MUSIC: Mozart wrote this concert aria in 1788 for one of his primary soprano muses, Aloysia Weber (Lange), his sister-in-law. It is composed as a brilliant allegro that races forward out of the gate, relentlessly chasing up and down the full vocal compass in elaborate roller coaster figures, peaking on High D. THE SONGBIRD: I once had a very vivid dream that I was producing a recital tour of American coloratura soprano Laura Claycomb performing a tribute program to Beverly Sills, singing all of Sills' favorite repertoire! I guess it's the red hair, the down-to-earth persona, and that incredible facility with high notes and rapid-fire coloratura -- never on better display than in this Mozart selection from a 2009 concert in Paris. The tempo here is a no-holds-barred allegro -- and Claycomb doesn't just keep up, but has every grace note, trill, and triplet in place, and actually seems to relish in the dazzling effect of the aria at this unrelenting pace. Claycomb was born in Texas in 1968, and has established herself as a top-tier coloratura soprano around the world, equally effective in all types of standard and obscure works in baroque, bel canto, classical, romantic, and modern genres. Name a lyric-coloratura role, and she has probably sung it! Laura Claycomb, soprano Les Art Florissants Jonathan Cohen, cond. Cite de la Musique, Paris November 8, 2009 (Recorded from digital Webcast)
