Staten Island University Hospital / Northwell Health (http://www.siuh.edu/), located at 475 Seaview Avenue in Staten Island, NY 10305, presents a recent study published in JAMA that looked at what happens when medical marijuana is introduced as a non-opioid alternative for the treatment of chronic pain and pain relief. Opioid overdose rates were 25% lower in the 13 states with legalized medical marijuana. “Does medical marijuana with its unique mechanism of pain control reduce a patient’s opioid need?” This is the question asked by Michael Ketteringham, MD, medical director of Consultation and Liaison in Staten Island University Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. Dr. Ketteringham suggests the JAMA study shows an association, and not necessarily a causal one. “Given the burden of opioid overdose deaths, any initiative that addresses this epidemic is worth a long hard look, especially in Staten Island, where our overdose rates are three times that of New York City.” For more information, call us at (718) 226-9000.
