TUTORIAL: (Please pardon the rushed video, I was tired and needed to get to sleep) You will need: Android TV box (I used the Onn 4K box for 20$, don't get the 1080p one for 15, it's way slower) An HDMI to VGA converter with audio (I prefer these slimline ones that screw directly to the VGA input port) 3.5mm to RCA cable The generic "Silver Box" VGA to Composite+S-Video converter with the six buttons on the side A computer with ADB set up Initial setup: Set up your android TV box as normal on a modern TV. Set the resolution to 1080p60. Set the font size to large. Install Projectivy through the google app store, enable its permissions and accessibility features, then dig through the projectivy settings and enable "Override Current Launcher" to set it as the default home launcher. We need to do this for the sole reason that the stock home screen launcher doesn't support 4:3 resolutions. Setup on CRT: Chain those converters! Android box to HDMI adapter, HDMI adapter to silver VGA converter, then finally either s-video or composite video from the silver box to your TV. If your TV has s-video, you will get a considerably cleaner picture. Connect the 3.5mm to RCA adapter from the HDMI adapter to the audio inputs on your TV. If your TV only has an antenna jack, you'll need to purchase an RF modulator to convert the video and audio signals to RF. This will allow you to use this setup even on an ancient vacuum tube set. Turn everything on, and you'll possibly notice the image rolling with no colour, or just a completely incoherent image. THIS IS EXPECTED! The silver box defaults to PAL video, you will need to blindly navigate the menu to change to your region's video standard, likely NTSC. Press menu, then press down 7 times, then press left or right until the picture comes in properly. You should now see your android TV box on your CRT, but the image will be squished horizontally. We're almost done! Enable developer options (click the build number in the "about" tab a bunch of times) and enable wireless debugging. Your android TV box will offer you an IP address, which you'll need to connect to in ADB. If you can't read the IP address, press the zoom button on the silver box to zoom into the picture. Connect to the tv box using the following command: adb connect [IP address goes here]:5555 Finally, send another command: adb shell wm size 1600:1200 Congrats, your android box is now internally running all its applications in 4:3! However, the android TV box is still outputting a 16:9 signal, just with black bars on the sides. Here's where the brilliance of this magic silver box comes in. Use the Hsize and Vsize adjustments in the menu to scale the android box's picture to just barely fill your CRT. When outside of the silver box's menu, the arrow keys will move the image around to center it. This magical feature is what allows us to fit a 16:9 video signal on a 4:3 TV. Additionally, if you plug in a modern HDMI source like a Nintendo Switch 2, you can fill the screen horizontally and compress it vertically, effectively letterboxing the 16:9 signal to properly display on a 4:3 set. The streaming box will stay like this after reboots, but NOT a factory reset. Changing the resolution from 1080p to 720p will reset the 4:3 mode, and you'll have to run the ADB commands again. I was also able to set up the streaming box's remote, so I can turn the TV on and off with the remote as well as adjust the volume. Apps tested: Youtube (menus run in 16:9 letterbox, as do 16:9 videos, but 4:3 videos and the player UI will fill the screen) Youtube music: Music player runs fullscreen 4:3 Please post below what apps you've tried! I don't have any streaming services to test.
