If you run local LLMs, you know the fatigue: every week there is "yet another" interface promising to be the one. In this video, we review LYRN, a new tool that claims to ditch the standard chat window for a totally different philosophy. But does the execution match the vision? In this video, we cover: 1. The "Live Reasoning" Philosophy We explain what makes LYRN different. The name stands for Live, Reasoning, and Structured Memory. Instead of stuffing everything into one massive, endless chat context, LYRN treats the LLM as a "reasoning engine" that pulls from structured files and tables to maintain continuity. 2. The Promise: Deterministic Control The goal is "deterministic control"—letting you decide exactly what memory gets used on every turn. It also features live resource gauges for CPU, RAM, and VRAM so you can see exactly what is happening under the hood. 3. The Reality Check: "Slow, Very Slow" We put LYRN to the test on a massive Nvidia RTX A6000 (48GB VRAM). The result? It ignored the GPU entirely. • The Bottleneck: We discovered it is a llama.cpp wrapper that defaults to CPU processing, making it sluggish even on powerful hardware. • The "Retro" UI: The interface is functional but dated. • Broken Features: Key selling points, like the "custom cognitive loops" for automation, simply didn't work during testing. 4. The Verdict LYRN has a genuinely fascinating vision for moving us beyond simple chatbots. However, with key features broken and performance lagging, the execution is currently "lagging way, way behind" the promise. It is not quite ready for prime time.
