Private Lives has opened at Hope Mill theatre. HER Productions has put their unique spin on Noel Coward's classic comedy, set against a backdrop of 1930s glamour. It tells the story of the charming, rich and utterly reckless Amanda and Elyot whose fiery marriage ultimately ended in a bitter divorce. They unexpectedly meet again on the first night of their honeymoons with their new spouses in the balmy moonlight of the French Riviera. Old flames re-ignite and impulsive love takes hold. But they divorced for a reason, and their turbulent romance soon spirals into a chaotic riot of passionate desire, slanging matches and outrageous battles. Hannah Ellis-Ryan, who plays Amanda tells us what the audience reaction has been so far and how HER’s production peels back the frothy surface and lays bare the complex power dynamics of passion, gender and sexual identity. Private Lives runs at Hope Mill Theatre until 8th February.
