Brain surgery is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Different surgical techniques are used depending on the condition, tumour size, and location. While traditional craniotomy remains the most common approach, minimally invasive techniques allow surgeons to operate with smaller openings, leading to faster recovery and fewer complications. Dr Azman Raffiq, a neurosurgeon in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, explains the various types of brain surgery: Craniotomy – The conventional method, where a skull opening (3-5 cm) is made to access the brain. Minimally invasive surgery – Uses smaller openings (1-3 cm) to reduce recovery time and tissue damage. Endoscopic surgery – Performed through a tiny skull opening (as small as a 20-cent coin) or even through the nose, avoiding external scars. Transnasal surgery – Removes tumours through natural pathways in the nose, often done with an ENT surgeon. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) – A procedure for Parkinson’s disease, using specialised instruments inserted through a small skull opening (10-cent coin size). Each brain condition requires a tailored approach, ensuring the safest and most effective treatment. Watch this video to learn how different types of brain surgery can be performed. Like this video?
