The track layers established a simulated “camp” approximately 500m (+/–) from the starting point. Track age at deployment was 8 hours. The handler was provided the known start, and from there Phiri worked the track toward the objective. When individuals remain in one location, their scent builds and settles into the ground and surrounding vegetation. This creates a scent pool (a concentrated pocket of human odor). After 8 hours, that scent picture has already begun to shift and disperse, so what the dog works is no longer “fresh,” but aged and influenced by terrain and airflow. Throughout the track, Phiri showed a combination of ground tracking and air scenting, adjusting based on terrain and scent movement. In tighter vegetation he worked more nose-down, while in more open sections he lifted his head to catch scent carried in the air. There was zero rainfall recorded that day, and no precipitation during the dwell time between the track being laid and deployment.
