UNESCO: List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - 2020 URL: https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/01599 Description: The traditional knowledge and techniques associated with Pasto Varnish mopa-mopa of Putumayo and Nariño encompass three traditional trades: harvesting, woodwork and decorative varnishing. Harvesting the mopa-mopa requires extensive knowledge, such as of the forest trails, climbing trees and delicately harvesting without damaging the plants. The practice is a source of identity and means of self-employment for the communities concerned. It is currently threatened by various factors, however, such as development and globalization as well as the difficulty of accessing the harvesting sites and the precarious conditions of the home workshops.
