These are not mere Yaoguai, but reflections of what the Monkey King once was — freedom, endurance, wisdom, ruthlessness, and authority — scattered across Mount Huaguo and twisted into trials. To reclaim the Great Sage’s armor is to confront his past. Cloudtreading Deer When Sun Wukong studied under Patriarch Bodhi at Mount Lingtai, he learned the seventy-two transformations and mastered the Somersault Cloud. His body became light as mist, his movements unhindered by earth or sky. Yet his impatience troubled his master, who foresaw calamity born from unchecked pride. The Cloudtreading Deer is said to be transformed from Wukong’s Lotus Silk Cloudtreaders. At first serene and graceful, it embodies freedom and agility. But once pressed, its ferocity surfaces. The carefree cloud collapses into violence, revealing the danger hidden within unrestrained liberty. Golden Armored Rhino After enduring Lord Lao’s furnace, Sun Wukong emerged with a heart of gold, lungs of silver, a copper head, and an iron body. Still, invulnerability never meant immunity to suffering. Five hundred years beneath the mountain. Samadhi Wind. Samadhi Fire. Execution, imprisonment, curses, and torment without end. If the Golden Armored Rhino was truly forged from the Great Sage’s armor, then it inherited his refusal to yield. Even with its horn shattered, it charges forward, again and again, embodying endurance born from endless pain. Feng-Tail General (Golden Feng Tail Crown) The Stone Monkey was not only fierce, but perceptive. He learned courtesy among humans, wisdom at Mount Lingtai, and restraint through experience. He forged bonds with Yaoguai, joked with immortals, debated Bodhisattvas, and listened when reason prevailed. He sought help when needed and avoided brute force when cunning sufficed. The Feng-Tail General mirrors this clarity. With many eyes and nimble steps, it studies both foe and self, retreating when danger peaks and striking only when advantage is certain. The crown upon the monkey’s head fits such a mind perfectly. Emerald-Armed Mantis Tang Monk preached mercy. Sun Wukong delivered judgment. On the Journey West, evil was not spared. Whether Yaoguai or human, cruelty was answered without hesitation. Blood debts piled high, and most bore the Monkey King’s hand. The Emerald-Armed Mantis, born from the Great Sage’s gauntlet, carries that same ruthlessness. Deceptive, precise, and cruel, it toys with Zhu Bajie as its master once did with enemies who crossed the line beyond forgiveness. Jingubang “That piece of iron — a small stroke kills, a light tap cripples.” After reclaiming the four armor pieces, the Destined One journeys to the Water Curtain Cave of Mount Huaguo. Beyond the waterfall, the past stirs. The Jingubang, 如意金箍棒 — the As-You-Will Gold-Banded Staff — is Wukong’s one true weapon. Forged as a measure to calm rivers and seas during the Great Yu’s conquest of the Flood, it answers only to its rightful bearer. Weight: thirteen thousand five hundred pounds. Authority: Heaven’s Equal. With the staff reclaimed, the legacy of the Great Sage stands whole once more.
