The ballad of Admiral Benbow recounts the action of 19-24 August 1702, between Benbow and the French squadron under Admiral du Casse off the coast of Santa Maria in the West Indies. Benbow, abandoned by two of his ships, pursued the French fleet. Despite suffering severe wounds, his leg having been shattered by chain-shot, Benbow continued to command his men throughout the engagement. He returned to his base in Port Royal, Jamaica, where he ordered the executions of Captains Kirby and Wade for desertion. He later died from the wounds he received. "Admiral Benbow" reuses an old and popular English Folk tune previously utilized in "The Ballad of Captain Kidd", written a year earlier in 1701. Multiple versions of this ballad have persisted in English oral tradition, which generally concern the events of August 1702. Performed by Michiel Schrey, Sean Dagher, Nils Brown, Nelson Carter, Richard Irwin, David Gossage (Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Sea Shanty Edition, Original Game Soundtrack, 2013).
