Filmed by: Tomaž Kožar Jesenice Skoda adds another model to its impressive range with the rather boastfully badged Superb. You have to be pretty confident to be so blatant in badging your car such, the big Skoda more than a match for its name. With a 100mm stretch in its wheelbase over it's VW Passat relative - which it bears more than a passing resemblance to - the Superb is a big car, that equating to huge amounts of cabin space for both front and rear seat passengers. Inside there's a quality feel that'll again be familiar to people more used to VW and Audis. The range of engines echoes that offered in all Volkswagen Group product ranges, including the excellent 1.9-litre 105bhp and 2.0-litre 140bhp turbodiesels. All engines from the 2.0-litre unit up offer respectable performance, though the smallest petrol can be a touch unrefined if pushed hard. The extra £1,000 for the 1.8-litre turbo is well worth it. Tiptronic automatics are available, as are five and six-speed manual transmissions, equipment levels across all trim levels being comprehensive - all cars getting air conditioning as standard. Find a winding road and the Superb is unlikely to impress the more demanding driver, but it does everything asked from it, and works well as a refined and capable long distance companion. Spacious, well-equipped and sensibly priced, the Superb really has everything it needs to compete in the family car market. If people see past the badge, they'll be getting a superb car for the money The first generation of the 'modern' Škoda Superb (B5, Typ 3U) manufacturered by Škoda Auto following it's acquisition by Volkswagen Group is effectively a rebadged Volkswagen Passat Lingyu - a four-door five-seat Passat saloon/sedan, but with a longer wheelbase that was derived initially for the Chinese market under the name Passat Lingyu, and rebadged ultimately under the Škoda marque for European markets. The Superb used the Volkswagen Group B5 PL45+ platform from 1999 B5 Volkswagen Passat LWB, "long wheelbase" 10 centimetres (3.9 in) longer - which was produced by Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive. This Passat Lingyu appeared two years before the release of the European Superb, and, although now discontinued in the European market, is still available in the Chinese market, although now updated.[2] It is available with several petrol and diesel internal combustion engines, which are all also available throuought the rest of the Volkswagen Group range; and like the B5 Passat, are mounted at the front, and orientated longitudinally. The base model, the 'Classic', is available with a 1.9 litre inline four cylinder (I4) Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) turbodiesel which produces a rated motive power output of 74 kilowatts (101 PS; 99 bhp), or a 2.0 litre petrol inline-four rated at 85 kW (116 PS; 114 bhp). The 'Comfort' and 'Elegance' models are offered with a with a 1.8 20valve Turbo petrol I4 rated at 119 kW (162 PS; 160 bhp), or either a 142 kW (193 PS; 190 bhp) V6 2.8 litre petrol engine, or a 2.5 litre V6 TDI rated at 120 kW (163 PS; 161 bhp). Transmissions available are a six-speed manual gearbox, or a ZF-sourced five-speed tiptronic automatic. As well as offering Volkswagen's long-standing 1.9 litre "Pumpe Düse" (PD) Unit Injector engine, the Superb eventually gained the use of the latest 103 kW (140 PS; 138 bhp) 2.0 litre TDIs found in other cars of the Volkswagen Group. The Superb received a minor facelift in August 2006[3] to incorporate Škoda's new radiator grille, headlights, side-repeater indicators integrated into the door mirrors, and C-shaped tail lights in the style of Škoda Roomster and latest Škoda Octavia. An interior redesign completed the upgrades. A 'Laurin and Klement' model became the top of the range, deposing the 'Elegance' model from that position. A range of new engines was introduced and the interior featured real wood as part of some trim levels. Akin to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the 'Comfort', 'Elegance' and 'Laurin & Klement' models even have an umbrella secreted in the rear door panel.
