For all of you late victorian era martial arts, pugilism, bareknuckle boxing, bartitsu selfdefense training, and boxing workout fans at.@DanOldSkoolConditioningMan . Once again, It's time for us to travel back 126 years to 1898 and take another step along our fighting fitness journey, learning the victorian style of boxing training and bareknuckle boxing and savate that would have been used in Bartitsu. Edward William Barton-Wrights New Art of Self Defence, the first mixed martial art of the modern age and taught at The Bartitsu School of Arms and Physical Culture. Now we start to look at how victorian and early edwardian era pugilism was actually trained by spending a day working out at the victorian Boxing gym. Looking at how to structure a victorian era boxing workout and training regime, the functional fitness training and strength and conditioning training that went along with it and gain a better understanding of what it was like to be a boxer and what victorian and edwardian boxing gyms were like as a Boxing training environment. Boxing gyms had been popping up at an increasing rate from the 1860s. These types of gyms were turning out a very different kind of boxing prize fighters. Fighters like Corbet and Fitzsimons were boxing champions in the 1890s. In this video episode of the bartitsu project. We look at a boxing workout that focuses on boxing skill work. In this boxing training, workout is all about putting together all the boxing punches we have learned into a workout comprising 10 exercises, drilling boxing punching drills promoting rhythm, timing and the boxers ability to endure greater punching volume. This workout has been put together using Joseph Charlemonts Savate and English Boxing manuals of 1899 and 1901. Also, this boxing workout let's us also understand how the boxing training solo practice exercises done in the group training boxing used in bartitsu, the victorian selfdefence system and how this was taught at the Bartitsu School of Arms and Physical Culture. Not only are we looking at boxing of the victorian era and the self defense training of bartitsu to understand boxing in this era better but also to see how we can learn to use victorian and edwardian era boxing training and fitness training techniques in our own fitness Training. The reason we are doing this is simply because boxing training requires very little, if any, equipment, so it makes for great home workout and fitness training workouts.
