A woman survives a crash landing on an out-of-the-way world with no hope of immediate rescue, with no companions to share her agony, with no goal but the irrational desire to reach Cathadonia's ocean; who understands neither how she'd been dumped into this situation nor why she'd been betrayed by her own kind, and who was ambivalently championed by a creature carrying out its own secretive work. (Synopsis edited from a description in the story itself) Originally published in the September 1974 issue of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and re-published in the April 1975 issue of a Japanese magazine called S-F. It appeared in The 1975 Annual World's Best SF, as well as many foreign language anthologies, half of which were German, then in two collections of the author's stories: Blooded on Arachne in 1982, and The Door Gunner and Other Perilous Flights of Fancy in 2012.
