The final flourish of the 'Requiem for the Living' orchestration, "Non Nobis, Domine" (Not to us, O Lord), transcends its brevity. Its lineage stretches back centuries, woven into the fabric of religious tradition. Originally found in the Psalms (Psalm 115:1), it expresses a core principle: attributing success and glory to God, not oneself. It finalises the Requiem's shift in focus. While preceding movements explore themes of mourning and loss, "Non Nobis, Domine" completes our redirection towards God's mercy and the promise of eternal life. It's a powerful declaration of humility, acknowledging that true victory lies not in earthly achievements, but in God's grace. This enduring chant also resonates with the history of the Knights Templar. Their motto, "Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam" (Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory), echoes the sentiment of the Requiem's closing phrase. Both expressions embody the Knights Templar's dedication to a cause greater than themselves, highlighting their humility and unwavering faith. It also served as a chant within Catholic recusant communities in Britain, during the first Elizabethan era. It thus remains one the few Catholic remnants to survive the Reformation here in the UK. By incorporating "Non Nobis, Domine" into the Requiem, we not only connect the work to a rich liturgical tradition but also evoke the spirit of selflessness and devotion embodied by the Knights Templar. This version, by Dan Forrest, originally premiered in Salzburg Cathedral, Austria, in 2018. Text: Latin [sung]: Non Nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam. Alleluia.
