Have you ever had a thought like one of these? "Because I feel there's no point in trying for this promotion, now I'm not going to try." "I think I'm socially awkward, so others don't like talking to me." "I feel like an imposter at work, so I'm incapable of succeeding in this role." Often, when we get stuck in a spiral of negative self-talk, we begin to conflate our thoughts with believability. In other words, "I had the thought, and so the thought must be true." But when we accept all of our thoughts and feelings as facts, they can start to boss us around—causing us to move away, instead of toward, the things that would be most helpful. One way we can elevate ourselves out of a negative self-talk spiral is to cognitively take on another perspective. So next time you have a challenging thought, ask yourself, "Who told you that?" //Speaking Susan inspires audiences to think, feel, and act differently with deeply impactful and positive outcomes for themselves, their colleagues, and their organizations.
