Work with videos in numbered order. If you learned something please like and subscribe! This time we're taking a look at a new scale (Mixolydian and its chords) in a more concise manner than we did with our two previous scales since the same practice routine is used with every scale. If you are following these videos in order, you should already be familiar with the process. Mixolydian is a widely used scale in all styles of music, so don't be fooled by my thumbnail showing a Country band (and the somewhat corny solo demonstration). Yes, Country players use it frequently but so do players of every other style. A heads-up regarding what everyone calls "major" triads: There are three scales in the Key that contain the intervals 1 3 and 5: Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian. Playing 1 3 and 5 from Ionian or Lydian are correctly called "major" triads because these are both major scales. If played from Mixolydian (1 2 3 4 5 6 b7) these intervals 1 3 5 are in reality, a "dominant" triad because they're being played from a dominant scale. Yes, the fingerings are exactly the same regardless, but names matter. So, two out of three times, a musician that says "major" triad, they may actually be correct. However, since the additional notes of a chord (its colors/embellishments) can be always be added, when it's analyzed incorrectly this can create a sonic train-wreck - including when you try to solo over it. (Wrong intervals added to a chord or a wrong scale used when soloing.) Discerning which scale the "major/dominant" triad is actually coming from in a song gets easier with the practice of analyzing songs. Don't worry too much about this for now. Serious Guitar has an entire chapter dedicated to song analysis.
