I was sixteen years old when I first realized I had a problem. A big problem. Her name was Lily Chen, and technically, she wasn't my cousin. But I'd been calling her that my entire life. My mom and Lily's mom, Grace, had been best friends since college. They were roommates, bridesmaids at each other's weddings, and had their kids around the same time. When I was born, Grace was in the delivery room. When Lily was born two years later, my mom was there. Our families did everything together. Holidays, vacations, Sunday dinners. We called each other's parents "aunt" and "uncle" even though there was no blood relation. And Lily and I called each other "cousin" because that's what our families told us we were. Family by choice, not by blood. I'm Mason Brooks, and I grew up in suburban Chicago. My dad, Tom, is an accountant. My mom, Sarah, is a teacher. Lily's dad, David, is a surgeon. Her mom, Grace, is a lawyer. Our families lived ten minutes apart. We went to the same schools. We had the same friend groups. We were always together. As kids, it was simple. Lily was just my annoying little cousin who followed me around and wanted to play with my toys. She had pigtails and missing teeth and skinned knees from falling off her bike. I was the big brother figure who reluctantly let her tag along. But something changed when I was sixteen and she was fourteen. I was a junior in high school. Lily was a freshman. And one day, I really looked at her. Actually looked at her. She wasn't the annoying kid with pigtails anymore. She'd grown up. Her dark hair fell in waves past her shoulders. She'd gotten contacts instead of glasses. She laughed differently, more confident. And suddenly, every time I saw her, my heart did this weird thing in my chest. I told myself it was nothing. She was my cousin. Well, not really my cousin, but close enough. Our families were so intertwined that dating her would be weird. Wrong. Crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed. So I pushed the feelings down and tried to ignore them.
