🎸 6 exercises that are simple to understand… but hard to execute. If you actually practice these, your improvisation will skyrocket No magic licks. No shortcuts. Just real control. 01:23 Exercise 1 - Chords on Beat 1 (No Hiding) Play the chord on beat 1 of every bar. Metronome around 80 BPM. Feel it in half notes. Click on 2 & 4. • Learn the shapes by heart • Learn the changes by heart • Play different voicings every chorus • No chart If you can’t play the harmony from memory — you don’t know the tune. 05:18 Exercise 2 – Guide Tones Only Play only the 3rd of each chord. Then only the 7th. Then connect 3 -7 smoothly through the changes. This is where real voice-leading lives. If this doesn’t sound good, adding more notes won’t help. 08:03 Exercise 3 – Arpeggios Only 🔎 No passing notes. No scale runs. Just chord tones. Isolate problem areas (last 8 bars, turnarounds, fast II–V’s). Arpeggios expose everything — weak transitions, unclear harmony, shaky fretboard logic. If it’s not clear here, it won’t be clear in your solo. 11:21 Exercise 3 – Scales Don’t just run them. Use them. Experiment with: • Landing on tensions (9, 11, 13) • Delaying resolution • Targeting non-chord tones on strong beats and resolving intentionally 13:12 Exercise 4– Rhythmic Discipline 🥁 One full chorus of: • Only eighth notes • Only triplets • Only sixteenth notes Then at 13:43: • Only ascending lines (low → high) • Only descending lines (high → low) Rhythm shapes perception more than note choice. 17:36 – Concept Lab Take a small section of the tune. Apply ONE concept consistently (for example: descending lines across the entire fretboard). Constraint builds clarity. Clarity builds freedom. 19:49 – Metronome Only Turn off the backing track. Just you and the click. Outline the harmony clearly. Keep the form. If you can make it swing alone — you own it. 23:06 – Be Gentle With “Mistakes” Just because a II–V–I looks like a II–V–I doesn’t mean it feels like one. Harmonic rhythm matters. Tension placement matters. Perception evolves. Improvisation has layers. 24:24 – No Rules 🚀 After all that: Play one full solo without restrictions. No concepts. No analysis. Just sound. ☕ Want to go deeper? Join the Jazzguitar Coffee Club: https://christina-j-ckel.mykajabi.com... #jazzguitar #improvisation #jazzpractice #guitarlesson
