Baloži narrow gauge peat railway Dārzu iela 14A, Baloži, Ķekavas novads, Latvija Baloži, the former peat factory workers' town, is located near Rīga, which has now become one of the most attractive dwelling areas near Rīga. Peat was obtained in the peat bog. Peat used mainly as fuel, litter, as well for peat insulation plates. There is a long history of peat extraction around town Baloži (in English – pigeons). Legally, the peat factory was founded in 1947, soon after that an extensive narrow-gauge (750 millimetres wide) railway network was built to transport peat from peat fields to the factory, with total length at least 28 kilometres, including a line from the factory to the Baloži station (railway line Rīga-Jelgava), to transfer peat to broad-gauge railway carriages. After most of the peat was extracted, peat factory in Baloži gradually decreased not only the peat production, but also the narrow gauge railway network. Most of the rails and rolling stock was transferred and used to build a new peat railway in Inčukalns from 2005, with the perspective that remains of the railway in Baloži would be eliminated altogether due to the depletion of peat reserves. As a result, only 2.5 kilometres from the former railway remains to only one of the peat fields. The railway was not operational since end of 2011. Today, the Baloži Peat Railway museum is a narrow-gauge railway maintained by enthusiasts with 2.5 kilometres of the former track. Renovation of the railway has been taking place since 2013, and in 2018, the first regular excursions along the renovated 1.1 kilometres long railway section were started. The railway collection includes several rare and unique locomotives and wagons, such as an authentic wagon canteen. As the railway is maintained by enthusiasts, it operates only during the summer season.
