(13 Jul 1998) English/Nat A Palestinian man has been slightly injured when a bomb exploded near the Orient House, the P-L-O's unofficial headquarters in east Jerusalem. The 40-year-old east Jerusalem resident was hurt in the head and legs when he came in contact with a plastic bag containing the bomb. The bomb had been placed near a rubbish bin some 30 metres (36 yards) outside the Orient House compound. The bomb exploded in a rubbish bin just metre (yards) from Orient House, the P-L-O's unofficial headquarters. In the past, the Orient House has been the scene of angry protests by right-wing Israelis who have demanded that the government shut down the site. It's been described as the core of a future government complex for the Palestinian Authority (P-A) in east Jerusalem, where Palestinians want to establish a future capital. Israel in the past has complained that the P-A was violating the Israeli-Palestinian autonomy accords by operating offices in the disputed eastern sector. But they have stopped short of shutting down the Orient House. The Israeli Commander of Police for the Jerusalem district said individual buildings don't get special protection. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We don't give protection to special buildings. Not on this side of the city, not on the west side. We have a lot of manpower here in all the area, in order to keep quiet and order in all the area, not only for the other thousand other places that we're doing here." SUPER CAPTION: Yair Yitzhaki, Jerusalem District Commander of Police Palestinian Minister in charge of Jerusalem affairs, Faisal Husseini, said that threats have been made in the past against the Orient House. He said he believed that Israeli extremists are responsible for the attack. SOUNDBITE: (English) 'We believe that there's a possibility that there's some Israeli extremes who are doing that. Also there police are making the same point but we must wait until the end of the investigations.' SUPER CAPTION: Faisal Husseini, Palestinian Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Israel annexed East Jerusalem after seizing it from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. Under the autonomy accords, the P-A may only operate in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and not in Jerusalem, whose status is to be determined in future negotiations. Investigations into the bombing are continuing.
