In this video we unbox and review a Chinese replica (aka clone) of the GM Multiple Diagnostic 2 (or MDI 2) scan tool which is a J2534 interface. These knock-off tools are considerably cheaper than the OEM Bosch version because they lack any of the newer MDI2 specific protocol support, and in this video we see why you get what you pay for. I also give you enough information to understand how to tell a clones apart from a genuine OEM MDI2 tool, and enough information to make an informed purchase decision. The GM MDI 2 was introduced to support vehicles build on GMs global B architecture starting in model year 2020. It provides support for unique protocols (e.g., CAN FD and DoIP) and features not available on the original MDI (which came out in 2007). The MDI2 is required for GM vehicles with the vehicle intelligence platform (VIP) as well (all since 2023). ALL of the current MDI2 clones (at the time this video was originally published) FAIL to implement these unique MDI 2 specific capabilities, thus rendering all of them nothing more than original 2007 era MDI clones functionally. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, I have been using MDI clones for more than five years professionally without issue. As my earlier video went over, the high quality clone version is an exact 1:1 replica of the original ETAS MDI. I expect these current fake MDI 2 versions to be the same level of compatibility, in terms of original MDI 1 functionality (it even has the same made up serial number of 22129579). However, ALL of the current MDI2 clones are NOT accurate copies, in terms of MDI 2 specific and unique functionality. So you should NOT purchase them for use with newer GM vehicles that require the actual MDI2 J2534 tool. Original MDI design unboxing and review video: • GM MDI Clone Scan Tool Unboxing Revie...
