I participate in a long-distance endurance snowkite race in Japan. The race covers a distance of 50 km in a bird’s-eye view, but the total distance travelled during the event exceeds 150 km. The race takes place over many hours, and the wind, weather, and snow conditions can change significantly throughout. It is held every year in the small town of Horonobe, located in northern Hokkaido. The region is known for its reliable winds and vast snow-covered pastures, providing an ideal environment for snowkiting. --- Hurikamuy, also known as Huri Kamuy or Hurikamuy, is a figure from Ainu mythology. The Ainu people are an indigenous group primarily found in Japan, especially in Hokkaido, as well as parts of Russia's Far East. Hurikamuy is associated with the wind, a central element in many Ainu myths, symbolising the connection between the natural and spiritual worlds. Snowkiting is an exciting winter sport where participants use a kite to harness wind power while skiing or snowboarding on snow-covered terrain. It's similar to kitesurfing, but instead of riding waves, you glide across snow and ice. Snowkiting combines kite flying, snowboarding or skiing, and wind energy, offering a thrilling challenge for those who love both winter sports and working with the wind. --- I am a snowboarder, kiteboarder, and snowkiter, living and teaching these passions as an experienced instructor settled in Yuzawa, Niigata, Japan.
