By the end of the 1980s, Newcastle United’s board was fighting a battle on several fronts but, by 1988, Hall had become the de facto leader of The Magpie Group, an organisation of local businessmen which sought to wrest control of Newcastle United. Hall was not interested in being a benefactor and he would, he claimed, be a reluctant chairman. Instead, he was seeking to democratise the club with a further share offering and, given the opportunity, would run United as a viable business with the aim of retrieving his investment. He would do that and more.
