Psychedelic drugs such as LSD and Psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) have long been investigated as potential treatment options for patients suffering from depression. One example is the work of Prof. Bastiaans at Leiden University treating Holocaust survivors with LSD in the 1960s (documentary on YouTube here: • Now Do You Get It - 1969 ). A tightening regulatory framework has meant there hasn't been much work on the mechanism of action of psychedelics, and how they can be used in treating depression. Recently, however, the team of Prof. David Nutt at Imperial College London has been able to perform several brain imaging studies using LSD and Psilocybin. Prof. Nutt and his team have recently shown exactly how LSD works on the brain, and have performed the first clinical trial of using Psilocybin to treat depression. PLEASE NOTE: we are NOT advocating self-medication with psychedelic drugs against depression. The research we mention in this video was done in a carefully controlled setting, with sessions guided by experienced psychiatrists. This is NOT something you want to do on your own!
