The first year of Donald Trump’s second term in the White House has been marked by profound changes in numerous areas of US foreign and defense policy. Trump’s emphasis on “transactional” and “America First” approaches in matters ranging from trade to military conflict resolution (for example, in Ukraine and Gaza) and his general distrust of longstanding alliances and multilateral institutions stands in stark contrast with Republican and Democratic predecessors since World War II. Moreover, unlike his first term, the American president has severely cut back the national security structure and now operates with a small handful of senior officials who echo his public rhetoric and carry out his sudden policy swings. The administration has pursued its agenda via executive orders and other decisions that not only bypass Congress but also challenge accepted legal practices and societal norms. Some developments—for example the administration’s campaign to detain and deport potentially millions of undocumented immigrants — while telegraphed during the presidential campaign and popular with Trump’s base, have been carried out with questionable legal bases leading to multiple legal challenges. There is now significant public disappointment (according to opinion polls) with administration policies regarding the economy and healthcare. This is contributing to cracks within the “MAGA” coalition as the 2026 mid-term elections draw nearer. This webinar takes stock of Trump’s first year and gazes into the future. How drastic are the changes to US global engagement and what are the implications for Europe, in general, and Finland, specifically? How worried should we be about American institutions and, more broadly, American democracy? What are the prospects for the second year of “Trump 2.0” domestically and internationally? Speakers: Maria Lindén, Research Fellow, FIIA Deborah McCarthy, Non-Resident Fellow, FIIA Leo Michel, Non-Resident Fellow, FIIA Chair: Ville Sinkkonen, Leading Researcher, FIIA Transatlantic Currents is a monthly webinar series hosted by FIIA’s Center on US Politics and Poweravautuu uuteen ikkunaan featuring American experts on political science and international relations. The series covers a wide array of timely topics from foreign and defense policy to US domestic issues of particular interest to the transatlantic community.
