INS Kalpeni will reach Vizhinjam coast on Saturday to raise awareness on coastal security and patriotism among fishermen. It carries 65 soldiers and six naval officers led by Lieutenant Commander Suraj Prakash. The ship will dock at the leeward wharf of the port. The Indian naval ship will be unravelled to the fisherman and other public. Although Covid 19 restrictions at present may not allow entry to the public this time. The warship can sail at a rocketing speed of 35 nautical miles. It has laser controlled firearms and infrared tracker. The indigenously engineered and built water jet can fast attack craft with the primary functions of coastal surveillance, patrolling, provide security for fisherman, rescue operations and anti-piracy operations in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. According to a report undertaken by the Island Development Agency (IDA), the length of rocks between Vizhinjam and Kovalam, among others, are at risk of becoming terrorist hideouts. The conclusion is based on an IDA assessment of 1,200 islets and other isolated island-like places along the country's coastline, which was done on the suspicion that they could be used as terrorist hideouts. Udayon Vazhi, the rocks beside KTDC, and the lighthouse are among the other places mentioned. The survey was done as part of the security measures implemented in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. The stretch of rocks between Vizhinjam and Kovalam (known as Edakkal) was proposed to be under observation during a security audit conducted by IDA, Indian Coast Guard, and Vizhinjam Coastal Police in 2018. Various security authorities are also assessing unattended structures near the Kerala coastline due to terrorist fears. #inskalpeni #vizhinjamcoast #ida
