Amsterdam is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the Netherlands. The city is situated at the mouth of the Amstel River, which flows into the IJ, an inland bay formerly connected to the Zuiderzee. Large parts of the city lie below sea level, protected from flooding by a complex system of dikes, dams, and pumping stations. The surrounding land is flat and low-lying, consisting largely of reclaimed land known as polders. These areas were drained using windmills and later pumping stations, allowing settlement and agriculture to expand into what was once marshland and shallow lakes. The city's historic development has been closely tied to water management and land reclamation. Amsterdam’s extensive network of canals was constructed during the 17th century as part of a planned urban expansion. These canals served multiple purposes: drainage, defense, and transportation. The city’s geography has strongly influenced its compact urban form and reliance on waterways. This video uses Google Earth imagery to show how geography shapes cities and sites.
