Last year in early October (after what was a fairly late winter thaw after the big snow dumps in mid September) I believe we were about 6 to 8 weeks too early to benefit from any tangible spring growth up high in the alpine nation park - which I had hoped would have started to poke through on the north faces by October. Nonetheless, instead what we found was rank brown feed on the north faces - with some marginal pick coming through - and a more noticeably abundant staple food source on the southern faces. This is what I love about backpack hunting in remote terrain - and particularly when exploring new alpine country - is that you are forced to keep thinking, keep questioning, and work things out through trial and error. Being flexible and willing to change the game plan and adapt your hunting plans (no matter what your pre-conceived ideas were) is a refreshing way to stay attuned to your surroundings. After all, sambar deer will keep you guessing at the best of times!! And I have no doubt I will be guessing again in two weeks (late May 2018) for another crack at the might black ghosts of the Great Dividing Range! yeeeeow (rabble over :) Keep sidling, MM
