This week I was so lucky to get the chance to drive a current British Touring Car around Brands Hatch Circuit with the awesome guys at @UnlimitedMotorsport . The day was one of their “Arrive & Drive” events, and boy, it was amazing. We arrived to a warm welcome from Jamie, And he told us where to go, and soon we headed off for the official drivers’ briefing for the track day. Then it was back for another overview of the day and breakfast (yummy!). There was food and drink all day—not that I drank much, but I must’ve had about 30 nervous wees. We all went out in a pre-organised order and got the chance to have a flying lap as a passenger next to Dexter Pattison, one of this year’s Unlimited Motorsport drivers. And wow, can the boy pedal! Dexter took us out on a very wet and slippery track, but he drove the car like it was on railway tracks and was faultless (except for one guy who got to see a bit of Brands Hatch’s grass for a moment, lol). I came out of the car feeling a little overwhelmed because Dexter was so good—I did wonder if I could ever drive a car at his speed. At about 10:30 it was my chance to jump in the Golf R Cup car and drive under the instruction of Olly Allen, who is such a nice guy. Olly gave me guidance and tips to help improve my driving experience, and we had such a giggle. It was 10 minutes of learning and laughing whilst battling the Golf in really soggy conditions, but when I got out of the car I felt back to normal and on a high. I felt so much happier flying around the track, so a big thank you to Olly. Next came lunch, and we all sat around chatting and eating as the rain finally stopped—pretty much bang on when the lunch bell went and the track closed. We all thought, “Yes, dry at last!” but alas, lunch ended, the track opened, and so did the heavens. I watched everyone get their chance out in the cars, and then at about 4 o’clock it was my turn. I was the last to go out. The guys put my name on the car, photos were taken, and then it was time to get in and get buckled down for the ride. The guys plugged in the comms and the first thing I heard was, “You alright?” in a strong Scottish accent… it was Dexter. We sat there for a few minutes while he ran through a few key things—how to shift gears, the general layout, and some tips for pulling away. Then he fired it up. I picked the revs up and… yep, stalled it. He fired it back up, I slipped the clutch, and we were away up the pit lane and out onto the live track. Wow, what a feeling—the car was so positive and gagging to be let loose. Dexter chatted on the intercom, and I could just about hear him over the scream of the engine and gearbox. He said that he’d talk me through the first few laps—where to head, where to brake—until he felt I was on it, then he’d go quiet and let me take over. Well, everything was happening so fast. As soon as you were accelerating out of one bend, you were back on the brakes for the next corner. But it was 20 minutes of brain-frying fun. It felt like moments after pulling out of the pit lane that Dexter was saying, “Head back in now, buddy,” and we turned into the pit lane and slowly rumbled down to be met by the team. I sat there, thanked Dexter for his help, and unpeeled myself out of the car, being greeted by my good buddy Bob, team owner, and Nicolas Hamilton asking how it went. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE. I have to admit, I’d been struggling with my mental health for the previous four weeks—feeling overwhelmed with everything in life—and right then, it had all fizzled away. I was just filled with excitement and joy. I can’t thank everyone enough at Unlimited Motorsport for such a well-organised day, especially as it was the first of a good few they’re running. I’d like to thank Jamie Warren, Olly Allen, nicolas hamilton @dexterpatterson4007 , and Bobby Sharpless for making it such a personal and great day. Definitely one ticked off the bucket list. I highly recommend anyone thinking of doing this to go for it—there’s nothing else like it. With such a great team, it genuinely felt like having your own race-team support for the day.
