Her visit was less than a day, but permanently changed the security situation in the Taiwan Strait. After Pelosi flew off, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched huge military exercises in the air and seas around Taiwan to simulate a blockade. In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Associate Professor Li Mingjiang at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, said that the military exercises have changed the status quo of cross-strait relations and security. He added that the blockade drills are unprecedented, and can be considered as Beijing’s first step towards unification through military actions.
