In this video I explain how I make the seats for my cedar strip canoe. Process: I use White Ash to make my seats. The final dimensions are about 13” wide and 9” deep. Make the rails longer than they need to be so you can cut them to fit under the gunnels after they are built. The rails are about 1”thick and 1 ½” wide. If you have scuppers make sure to measure your dimensions beforehand in a way that will end up placing your crossrails under your gunnels where there isn’t a scupper hole. I do this by laying parallel stick across the top around where I want my seats to be and measuring the distance from each other. After you build the seats, place them over the top of the location you built them for and mark where to cut them and cut them so they hang from the gunnels without touching the inside of the hull. Then drill matching holes on the crossrails and gunnels. The cane I’m using is 3mm wide. I drill ¼” holes spaced ¾” away from eachother (center to center). I use brass carriage bolts to install the seats. It’s important to secure the seats in a way that is easy to remove because it makes revarnishing everything in the future much easier. I get all my brass hardware from Noah’s Marine (http://www.noahsmarine.com/customkiti...) The last step before varnishing and caning is to coat all the trim, seats, and yoke in 3 coats of epoxy, then sand that seal to a 220 grit wetsand. In my next video I’ll show how to weave the cane for the seats. Here are a couple good resources to learn more about Cedar Strip Canoe Building: https://www.amazon.com/Canoecraft-Ill... - “Canoecraft” is the cedar strip canoe building bible. Buy it and read the whole book before you start building. http://forum.woodenboat.com/ - This site is actually really helpful. Usually if I type a specific boat building question into google a previous forum post from the Woodenboat Forum is near the top. You can also post your own questions. http://www.instructables.com/id/Build... - This guy (Jim Clem) made a very detailed step-by-step guide to cedar strip canoe building. There are a lot of helpful process explanations for some of the trickier parts of building. I used his blog a lot while building my first canoe. Feel free to comment on this video if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!
