It was released on Netflix on November 7, 2025, after a limited theatrical run. Synopsis The film is framed by a sequence set in the Arctic, where a dying Victor Frankenstein is discovered by Captain Anderson's expedition ship and crew. Victor begins to recount his life story, leading into an extended flashback. Victor, the son of an emotionally abusive renowned physician, becomes obsessed with defeating death after his mother dies in childbirth. As an adult surgeon, he secures funding from a wealthy, dying arms manufacturer, Henrich Harlander, to pursue his experiments in creating life from preserved body parts. He works with his younger brother William and William's fiancée, Elizabeth, the latter of whom he develops feelings for. Victor successfully animates his creation using lightning, but is immediately disgusted by the Creature's appearance and abandons him, later attempting to kill him by fire. The Creature survives and escapes, eventually finding refuge in a remote home where he secretly observes and is befriended by a blind old man who teaches him to speak and read. The Creature finds Victor's papers and learns the truth of his origins and abandonment, which, combined with the subsequent death of the blind man and being shot by the man's family, fuels his existential loneliness and rage. Seeking a companion, the Creature confronts Victor on the day of Elizabeth's wedding to William. When Victor refuses, a violent struggle ensues in which Victor accidentally shoots and kills Elizabeth. The Creature then kills William, and a dying William calls Victor the true "monster". The Creature deforms Victor's face and forces his creator to hunt him to the Arctic in a twisted reversal of their roles, vowing to be his master from then on. The narrative returns to the Arctic, where Victor is found by Captain Anderson and his crew. The Creature boards the ship for a final confrontation. A dying Victor, having realized his misdeeds, finally apologizes to the Creature and calls him "son". The Creature forgives Victor, who then dies in peace. The Creature leaves the ship, frees it from the ice, and finally embraces the sunlight as Victor once taught him, choosing to live despite his grief. Themes The film is less a traditional horror movie and more a gothic drama exploring themes of generational trauma, paternal failure, love, forgiveness, and the nature of monstrosity. Del Toro shifts the focus to the psychological consequences of abandonment, suggesting the true monster is the creator who withheld love and empathy.
