5 Fells One Brutal Hike (At 61) - Wainwright's Walla Crag To Armboth Fell

On this solo hike, I set out to link seven Wainwright fells in one hike from Great Wood car park near Keswick: Walla Crag, Bleaberry Fell, High Seat, High Tove, Armboth Fell, Great Crag and Brund Fell. The day started well and had good paths – and they have even added a path between High Seat and High Tove, which 30+ years ago did not exist, but from there it turned into one of the most mentally and physically draining slogs I’ve had in the Lake District. Deep, energy-sapping bogs, hidden holes and rough ground between High Tove and Armboth Fell broke my rhythm; my legs were shot. I’d planned seven Wainwrights, but by the time I reached Armboth Fell, I had nothing left for Great Crag and Brund Fell. I’m 61 and on a mission to complete all 214 Wainwrights before I turn 62 in August 2026. I’ve done more than half now, and I thought I knew what to expect from this area after over 50 years of hiking here, but this “High Seat fix” proved me wrong.
