Today, we take a fascinating look at 1980’s Computer Systems, Data Collection, Personal Privacy, Data Security and related issues through this partially restored NOVA documentary excerpt. First aired in 1981, the topics are still of vital interest today due to the proliferation of personal computers, smart phones, Global Internet WWW access and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Provided for historical review and comment, various speakers describe the tactics, practices, issues and ramifications of the growing collection of personal data by giant government and private databases and how personal privacy is and has been under threat. Which of these issues and technologies are of concern to you today? The film starts with a brief but important privacy address given by then president Richard Nixon in 1974, followed by numerous interviews with many experts, educators and scientists , Paul Armer of the Charles Babbage Institute. Computers, Morton Halperin, of the Center for National Security Studies, Dr. Gus Simons of Sandia Labs, and others. Seen are Data Centers of the late 1970s up to 1981, and privacy legislation by various countries is discussed. France’s project to expand computers into homes in 1979-1981 is explored. The U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 is mentioned, as well at the National Security Agency (NSA) role in communications analysis and foreign intelligence gathering. EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) hacking, data encryption and data mining are discussed. Related topics of finance, telecommunications, criminal activity, data protection, access control and computer crimes are also focused on.
