While many of us live in apartments of units, this doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a lush or prosperous garden—even if it’s on the balcony. So, how do you grow plants on a balcony? In this episode of Green Space, Fabian Capomolla from The Hungry Gardener shares his top tips for growing plants on balconies including five key considerations for gardening on a balcony. According to Fabian, balconies are notoriously windy which is not the ideal as wind can wreak havoc for plants and gardens. Most balconies are made up of tiles, pavers, or concrete which means they can also become very hot. This can cause soil to dry out faster and heat stress for the plants. Fabian suggests choosing plants that are tolerant of these conditions and along with regular watering. While balconies can become extremely hot environments for plants in summer, they can also become extremely cold in winter. “And because you’re planting in a pot, the soil temperature is actually going to drop more than if you were planting in the ground”, says Fabian. It’s also important to consider the aspect of your balcony. For example, if you have a south-facing balcony your plants won’t get much natural light, especially in winter. And, a west-facing balcony might experience the harsh afternoon sun. Even if the aspect is perfect for growing plants on your balcony, you might have a neighboring building that blocks out a lot of light. Fabian also recommends considering the weight of the pots and planters, along with the added weight of the soil and plants. You don’t want too much weight on the balcony, nor do you want your plants to fall off and down to the ground. Ready to start your balcony garden?
