Hard Lessons in Library Acquisitions

This presentation will be co-led by a seasoned leader with extensive experience in the field and a newer leader navigating our first year in acquisitions. Together, we bring both long-standing perspectives and fresh insight into the challenges and barriers of the work. This dual lens will allow for a more holistic exploration of acquisitions: the good, bad, and downright ugly. In this talk, we will share our experiences and provide ideas for potential solutions to commonly faced acquisitions challenges. These hard lessons include learning to ask questions, how to deal with campus bureaucracy, acquisitions funds, various sales & negotiation tactics, and advocating for your library. Attendees can expect to gain ideas for solutions to experiences in their acquisition roles, learn adaptive strategies for combating challenges along the way, and feel less alone in the process.
