MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) was standardized in 1983, but had been in development by engineers at Sequential Circuits for a few years before that. That’s 40 years of a design classic, but still used widely in every digital audio workstation, including iOS recording systems. What is it though? How is it useful in music? Well, the answer is that it is musical data, and one such analogy could be: Musical notation - Musician’s Eyes to Musician’s fingers - Acoustic Grand Piano is the same concept as: Musical information in computer - Audio/MIDI interface - Sound Module That’s what MIDI was designed to do - it could connect any two digital instruments together, and indeed one computer could play 16 different sounds at once, all down one cable. It was nifty at the time, and still is... In this video, I show the basic possibilities of MIDI, and as usual with something like this it’s the concept that matters, not the fine details.
